McDonald's cooking oil trans fat-free in U.S., Canada

OAK BROOK, Illinois (Reuters) - McDonald's Corp has switched to cooking oils free of trans fats in all of its restaurants in the United States and Canada, Chief Executive Jim Skinner said on Thursday.

The restaurants made the switch over the past few months, he said.

By the end of the year, McDonald's pies and other baked goods will also be free of trans fats, Skinner told the company's annual meeting.

Consumption of trans fats -- often in the form of partially hydrogenated vegetable oils -- increases the risk of coronary heart disease, according to health authorities.

McDonald's, the world's largest hamburger chain, was among the first to say it would stop using unhealthy oils, but it has been slow to make the change.

Wendy's, the third-largest hamburger chain, swapped to trans fat-free cooking oil in 2006. Yum Brands Inc's KFC and Taco Bell chains in the United States completed such a switch last year.

Burger King Holdings Inc, the second-largest burger chain, has promised to switch its U.S. outlets to trans fat-free oils by year-end.

There is nothing good about trans fat - but IMHO - this is just the tip of the iceberg for the bad things most people eat at a McDonald's.

I am not faulting McDonald's - they are feeding people what they want to eat. It is not the role of McDonald's to only sell people what is good for them.

And McDonald's does sell a lot of good things.

McDonald's is beat up over stupid things like that "documentary" "Super Size Me" where the guy goes and eats all those carbs - and then blames the fat in the food.  Some people have no common sense - but yet call this crap science.

Note that there are many low carb dieters that eat at fast food restaurants almost everyday - and they lose fat, build muscle, and get healthier.  But they aren't ordering a regular meal.

We are starting to see the effects of raising a nation of children on beef and chicken raised on hormones and antibiotics, fried foods, buns and other bread, french fries, sugary drinks, and a dessert with every meal.

    It's not pretty.

I think it is great that the fast food chains are switching to healthy oil..However most of their food still ranks in the not so nutritios mode. Lots of starch, french fries etc...I am for afast food salad and veggie place.
