This site does a great job listing the definition, symptoms! In fact - it is the best website I have seen addressing the problem.
What is Metabolic Syndrome X?

The Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/nhanes.htm (NHANES III), and the National Institutes of Health http://www.nih.gov (NIH) defined an individual with Metabolic Syndrome X (MSX) as a person with three or more of the following conditions:
- Waist circumference greater that 40 inches (102 cm) in men, greater that 35 inches (88 cm) in women
- A serum triglyceride level above 150mg/L (1,7 mmol/L)
- HDL cholesterol below 40 mg/dL (1.04 mmol/L) in men, below 50 mg/dL (1.29) in women
- Blood pressure raised; above 135mg/85mm Hg, or taking a hypertensive medication
- Fasting blood glucose above 110mg/dL (6.1 mmol/L) or taking antidiabetic medication
NHANES III indicated that 24% of the US population has MSX, and the percentage increased dramatically with age, affecting 43% of the population in 60-69 year olds.

I love this website! It almost scores a 100 with me - except for this statement
"You need some carbohydrates for proper brain function. "
I don't know who started this myth - but it is completely and totally untrue. Dr Atkins has addressed this in his book. Your body can make all the blood sugar it needs from protein and fat.
I have been in Atkins induction for over 5 years. I try to eat zero grams of carbohydrates every day. And despite what some people say - there is nothing wrong with me
I don't want to sound negative about this group or detract from what they are doing. They are doing wonderful work. For example, how many other sites about Syndrome X, type 2 diabetes, and metabolic syndrome tell you that the low carb diet is the best solution?
Yes, some people can starve themselves and over exert themselves and regain their health. But many fat and obese people can not do this - so the low carb diet becomes the only way.
